Growing up in a small coal mining town in WV, I never considered the negative impact that coal had on the environment. Sadly, it was just a way of life. Coal dust would eventually consume both of my grandfathers lungs and cut their lives short. In 2005 I attended an exhibition at USC, where I was able to witness firsthand the aftermath of a coal miners lung that had been eaten away from the unavoidable pernicious black dust. Immediately, I was overcome with emotion. From that moment on, I knew that I wanted make a change, and maybe my actions would encourage others to follow.

Eighteen months later, my daughter was born. What did the future hold for her? The average global footprint is roughly 4.8 tons per person, but in the US, it’s much higher, exceeding 16-21 tons per person. Those statistics are astounding! We need to be held accountable for the future of our beautiful planet, and especially for the people we love.
